Yoga teacher extraordinaires Alice, our Development & Outreach Director and Jaime, our Program Director invited Kim from Campbell Salgado Photography to join their Street Yoga class at Rosemary Anderson High School in Portland. Looking at these gorgeous photos makes me beyond grateful to see in full color, the beauty that can rise out of a Street Yoga class.
Campbell Salgado PhotographyStreet Yoga teachers have many different sites they visit, offering yoga to a diverse range of students, many being small children all the way into adulthood. In this case, Alice and Jaime had a class full of teenagers who wanted nothing more but to be challenged with partner yoga and acrobatics. These photos depict how creative a class can be but also the importance of physcial play. Big poses, big smiles.

There is something to be said about the power of a good group circle and creating space for connection. Even more,  holding a body high in the air – supporting their weight with your own physical and inner strength. It can be empowering as you press your palms into theirs and let go of fear or worry, lifting them above with feelings of confidence – knowing you will not let them fall. When we look behind the scenes through the lens at this program visit, Jaime and Alice cultivated play, strength, confidence and trust during their Street Yoga class.  A moment that is truly invaluable.

Ideal teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross, then having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create bridges of their own. – Nikos Kazantzakis

Play energizes us and enlivens us. It eases our burdens. It renews our natural sense of optimism and opens us up to new possibilities. – Stuart Brown, MD
