Spring is a busy time for Street Yoga and our Partner Sites. We are excited to continue our weekly Portland classes with 14 different programs at 10 different Partner Site locations throughout the summer. We also have 1 program in Salem, OR and 14 different programs in Seattle, WA.
As many of you know, we have made a variety of changes to our programming over the past year including increasing the types of professional development training offered free to our volunteer teachers, such as “Mandated Reporter Training” and “Adapting Yoga for Trauma”, and expanding our policies and procedures to align with national best practices for trauma-informed yoga for children, youth, and their caregivers.
Watch for upcoming announcements about the professional development trainings that will be offered by Street Yoga in Portland in the summer, fall, and winter months!
Spotlight on a Street Yoga Portland Partner Site:
Street Yoga is proud to partner with the David Douglas SUN Community School, which is one of the many programs offered by Metropolitan Family Service in our community. A SUN Community School is a support hub where schools and communities work together to support the success of children and families and provide a comprehensive array of services.
SUN provides free after school activities, including Street Yoga classes, to students all year long! After school activities are followed by a free dinner service and an activity bus that takes students home at 4:50 pm. SUN is committed to providing free community and family engagement events, educational workshops, and culturally specific family nights. SUN strives to help students find success by helping remove barriers that stop students’ from focusing on academics.
Street Yoga has deeply appreciated our partnership with the David Douglas SUN Community School for a variety of reasons. One aspect is the shared desire of both organizations to offer high quality opportunities to youth and families at no charge, which creates access and enrichment that might not otherwise be possible for some students and families. Another valued aspect of partnership is the comprehensive types of support and relationships of trust that the David Douglas SUN Community School staff offer their students. Street Yoga’s offerings for youth are even more engaging when students have their other basic needs supported. Conversely, the David Douglas SUN Community School offerings are amplified by the Street Yoga classes, which provide a variety of benefits to youth including improved concentration, increased physical and emotional wellness, improved sleep, and increased resilience. In short, the partnership allows youth to be even more fully supported and engaged physically, emotionally, and mentally through fun and inclusive yoga and mindfulness classes.
Thank you for being one of our incredible Street Yoga Partners, David Douglas SUN Community School!
