Gratitude

We had a great event called Karma Night last Saturday Night!
The evening began with an intro to AcroYoga class taught by Superbaby (Jacob Handwerker and Lila Donnolo). It was community building, inspiring and loads of fun. We also got to see a beautiful demonstration of Acro Yoga and some of us even got to fly with Jacob and Lila. Check out Jacob's regular Acro Yoga class 10-12 am every Thursday at Near East Yoga (707 NE Broadway) or Lila's Acro Yoga Class on Sundays 4:30pm-6:15pm at Yoga Bhoga. Thank you Jacob and Lila!
The class was followed by a wine and pizza reception and Street Yoga orientation. Thank you to Cristom Vineyards, love and squalor and to Taste Unique, who donated the most fabulous home-made mini-pizzas ever.
Thanks you also to Justine Flynn for the beautiful harp music. If you loved her and want to book her for our next party or community event, e-mail her at jfly180@yahoo.com
A great big thank you to Yoga Union Community Wellness Center for hosting this event and to Jessica for all her hard work.
Finally, special thanks to street yoga volunteers Jennifer Netherby, Laura Walsh and Jordana Leeb for working the event. Couldn't have done it without you. Much love.

Recap of the DC Street Yoga Training
Comments from trainees at the DC Street Yoga Teacher Training
- "Thanks again for sharing your work, your knowledge, experience, and wisdom, and so much of yourself with us/me last weekend! This is the missing link in my life and I am so grateful to have connected with it."
- "I'm still incredibly inspired from the weekend, and I'm looking forward to on-going work."
- "I had a wonderful weekend. It felt like a spiritual retreat for me. Even after I left every evening, I came home and continued self-reflection and the "practice." I stand in Tadasana, grateful to have been a part of such an inspiring, transformative project."
- "The training was incredible."
Huge thanks to the folks at Yoga District for hosting our recent training in Washington DC. Their gracious support was uplifting in every way!
The training itself was a wonderful whirlwind. Thirty people came to share an amazing weekend. Some of the highlights:
We had a wonderful connection with Yoga District, founders of a great group of four studios in DC that offer yoga at affordable prices with a true community feel. Thank you especially Jasmine and Jessi!.
Seeds were planted for a long-term affiliation between Yoga Activist and Street Yoga, which will help them grow stronger and bigger, and give Street Yoga a homebase on the east coast.
We offered a new, mini-breakout session on yoga in hospitals, which was a great success; we focused on yoga for people in medical and home-health situations.
We began a long overdue discussion about yoga, race and cultural competency, especially as it pertains to serving the African American community.
Shakta Kaur Khalsa shared a special hour-long training with us. Thank you Shakta; this was inspiring!!.
For those folks living in DC who want to get involved with yoga service, contact folks at Yoga Activist or stop by any of the Yoga District studios.
Street Yoga Teacher Trainings
We offer a weekend teachers' training for community members interested in learning how yoga serves vulnerable young people and their families, not only homeless youth, but young people who are faced with challenges stemming from overcoming the pain of sexual and physical abuse, homelessness, mental illness or familial substance addiction and other traumas.
The training is open to experienced yoga teachers as well as those with little to no experience with yoga. In the past we've had massage therapists, nurses, social workers, teachers and many others join us for a weekend of connection, learning and soul-building.
We offer 14 hours of CEU's for Social Workers and Yoga Teachers for this training.

This new training will be in Portland, OR in December 4,5,6. It is geared towards people who have taken our core teacher training or have significant experience teaching yoga and working in a social service context (though they don't have to have been at the same time). Learn about:
- the physiological and psychological characteristics of trauma on the body and mind
- how yoga and mindfulness can heal in the wake of trauma
- communication techniques to contain and defuse conflict and better advocate for yourself and those in your care.
- best practices for teaching yoga to specific populations, focusing on addiction recovery, abuse survivors, homeless youth, young moms, kids in detention, and more.
