May Street Yoga Update
Thank you for sharing a few moments with us at Street Yoga. It's been a busy, exciting month, and we hope you are well wherever you are.
This recently came our way:
"Your yoga begins when you leave the classroom. It's how you relate to people and how you relate to the world. Your yoga is the giving and receiving. It's wellness between the inner and outer worlds.
Your yoga is living the purpose of your life. Your yoga is to spread peace, one person at a time."
--Nancy Gerstein from Guiding Yoga's Light

Acro Yoga
Street Yoga hosted an Acro Yoga Workshop for Project Return at Jefferson High School this May in North Portland. The students did not want to participate at first and had never done yoga before. There was a lot of negative energy in the room when we began. By the end of class, the students were laughing and sweating, calling yoga “tight” and asking for us to “hook them up with more yoga.” Acro Yoga is based in San Francico and blends the spiritual wisdom of yoga, the dynamic power of acrobatics and the loving kindness of Thai massage. New Community Sites
Street Yoga is pleased to add the Bradley Angle House as a new community site for Street Yoga classes. Bradley Angle House is an organization committed to ending domestic violence in our communities as well as providing services to survivors. In addition to housing, case management, advocacy and education, the Bradley Angle House strive to supply families with a safe space to heal from trauma. Many youth in shelter lack the skills to self-soothe, experience low self-esteem and many of the symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, including anxiety, flashbacks, and physical pain. Street Yoga’s yoga and meditation classes will provide the opportunity for youth to acquire some of these skills in a safe, supportive environment. They also can provide the opportunity for mothers to deepen their bond with their children in a fun and nurturing space.
Our other current community sites include: Outside In, Letty Owings Center, Harry’s Mother, The community Transitional School, Salvation Army White Shield, Morrison Child and Family Service's FSAT Program (Family Sexual Abuse Treatment) and The Residential Alchohol and Drug (RAD) Program at the Juvenile Detention Center.
Street Yoga Trainings
We just returned from San Francisco, where 15 dedicated participants from all over the west came together to share the work of compassion and service in a fun and uplifting weekend. The energy was amazingly thoughtful and uplifting, and everyone left feeling energized, connected and inspired. The teachers were thoroughly touched by the depth of passion and commitment on the part of all the participants.
The next Street Yoga training will be in Portland, OR the first weekend in August. There are a few spots remaining.

Personal Note
As some of you who were reading these newsletters a year ago know, Felix Lilly, the son of Street Yoga founder Mark Lilly, was seriously injured in a fall from a tree nearly one year ago. The family wanted to invite anyone from the Street Yoga community in Portland next Monday, June 2d, to join them under the Tree in Laurelhurst Park, to celebrate not only a year of healing within their family, but the power we each have to heal ourselves and each other. Feel free to contact mark with any questions.
Namaste
As our northern hemisphere moves into summer, hold in your embrace best wishes for all life on this amazing planet.
Blessings,
All the folks at Street Yoga
