This month, Street Yoga’s featured Portland Partner Site is Seneca House.  Street Yoga provides bi-weekly yoga and mindfulness classes at Seneca House, a program within Boys and Girls Aid. For 128 years, Boys and Girls Aid has been helping Oregon’s children by finding permanent homes through adoption and providing temporary safe places to stay through shelters and foster homes. The organization believes all children deserve loving, caring adults in their lives.

Seneca House is a shelter program of Boys & Girls Aid which offers a safe living environment for teen girls in the foster care system. For many of the girls served, this is the first safe and stable place they have lived in a long time. A supportive environment is provided for them to strengthen their social skills and build up their self-esteem. The program’s goal is for each girl to be empowered, to see her own beauty and strengths, and to make the most of herself. Seneca House serves up to ten girls at a time and more than 100 girls annually.

At Street Yoga, our mission is to build capacity in youth to overcome trauma and to create meaningful, healthy lives through yoga and mindfulness.  As such, our partnership with  Seneca House enables us to reach out to  many teenage girls that might not otherwise have access to yoga and mindfulness.  Through this partnership, we hope to facilitate learning and skill building that will help each girl grow and become even more resilient.  Our Street Yoga volunteer at Seneca Houses uses interactive classes and tries to incorporate the students’ input into each class, to complement the empowerment approach of the Seneca House program.
